A quote from Dr. Mary Newport, MD
“How can coconut oil help in Alzheimer’s, other dementias, ALS, MS and other diseases? What these diseases have in common is that there are brain and/or nerve cells that have inadequate uptake of glucose, which is the usual energy source for most cells. In Alzheimer’s, for example, there is insulin resistance in the brain that begins in the areas affecting memory and eventually progress to other areas of the brain. The brain and other cells can easily switch over to using ketones as an alternative fuel which occurs during starvation but are not usually available in well fed people. Coconut oil contains about 60%medium chain fatty acids that are partly converted to ketones in the liver, cross into the brain easily, and can then be used as fuel. Also, the remaining medium chain triglycerides are used immediately as fuel and are not stored as fat. Simply put, ketones help to bypass the problem of getting glucose into the brain and nerve cells. I have heard from nearly 300 people who have reported about themselves or loved ones a positive response to taking coconut and/or MCT oil; these are mostly people with Alzheimer’s or other dementias, but also more than twenty with Parkinson’s and several each with MS and ALS, including one man with ALS who has been stable for more than three years. I intend to add to this information on a regular basis. Please look at my website for more information (free articles and diet guidelines to print out) as well as information about my book and other related books at www.coconutketones.com ”
